Also, the movie particularly centers on the clash between Brad Pitt&#8217;s Achilles and Eric Bana&#8217;s Hector, culminating with Sean Bean&#8217;s Odysseus&#8217; plan with the Trojan Horse and the destruction of Troy itself.<\/p>\n<p>While the movie makes some fairly drastic changes in terms of various characters&#8217; fates, <em>Troy<\/em> is still well worth watching, especially because the movie was nearly directed by Nolan himself. Both the beloved 1981 original and the 2010 remake feature all kinds of ancient monsters, vengeful gods, legendary weapons, and major quests. <\/p>\n<p>Likewise, the 1981 film is particularly notable for its use of practical effects and the groundbreaking work of stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen. Similarly, Nolan&#8217;s extremely limited use of digital effects and preference for the practical in <em>The Odyssey<\/em> make the original <em>Clash of the Titans<\/em> feel like a natural companion film. George Clooney plays Ulysses Everett McGill as an intentional parallel to Odysseus, embarking on an absurd journey filled with modern-day stand-ins for the poem&#8217;s classic dangers like the Cyclops and Sirens. <\/p>\n<p>Examples include Everett and his fellow prison escapees encountering a one-eyed Bible salesman, as well as a group of seductive women offering whiskey. Bruce Wayne hasn&#8217;t been Batman for years by the start of <em>The Dark Knight Rises<\/em>, and he&#8217;s ultimately broken and faced with intense trials before he finally returns to Gotham, reclaiming his true self as Batman and ridding his city of Bane&#8217;s influence. <\/p>\n<p>This is not unlike the trials and temptations of Odysseus and his ultimate return to Ithaca, reclaiming his identity and ridding his kingdom of the suitors (the worst of whom is ironically played by current Batman actor Robert Pattinson). Like Batman, Odysseus&#8217; greatest asset was his intelligence and cunning, and he similarly used a disguise in his mission of vengeance in the film&#8217;s third act. Despite having lived thousands of years apart, both Oppenheimer and Odysseus are presented as men who grapple with the dark world-shaking consequences of what they&#8217;ve built. <\/p>\n<p>After the Trinity Test, Oppenheimer realizes the atomic bomb has forever altered humanity&#8217;s future, while Nolan&#8217;s version of <em>The Odyssey<\/em> sees Odysseus viewing the Trojan Horse as the beginning of the age&#8217;s end, a violation of the fragile bonds holding early civilization together.
