While some of these movies in question have been helmed by popular American directors, a few others hail from other parts of the world. Falling in the latter category, director Na Hong-jin&#8217;s <em>Hope<\/em> is one of the most anticipated movies of the year.<\/p>\n<p>With a solid line of work that includes highly acclaimed <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/wailing-other-similar-deep-thrillers\/\" target=\"_blank\">movies like <em>The Wailing<\/em><\/a> and <em>The Yellow Sea<\/em>, Na Hong-jin has consistently proven his ability to deliver some of the grittiest and most atmospheric thrillers in modern South Korean cinema. However, when the movie&#8217;s trailer actually reveals the central creatures, they seem to closely resemble live-action versions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/attack-titan-types-versions-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\">titans from <em>Attack on Titan<\/em><\/a>. They are massive and have humanoid appearances with disturbingly exaggerated facial features and elongated limbs. <\/p>\n<p>Some scenes from the trailer also hint that instead of being mindless monsters, the creatures also misunderstood beings like the Titans in <em>Attack on Titan<\/em>. One sequence in particular shows smaller versions of the creatures, establishing how they, too, have a sense of community like humans and there is more to them than meets the eye.<\/p>\n<p>The themes of survival in the upcoming movie seem reminiscent of <em>A Quiet Place<\/em> where the characters will seemingly be cut off from the rest of the world while navigating the central threat. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/a-quiet-place-movies-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Quiet Place <\/em>movies<\/a>, <em>Hope<\/em> will feature little military involvement in its setting. Instead, it will follow a ragtag group of out-of-their-depth individuals who will struggle to contain the threat with their limited resources. <\/p>\n<p>Given how Na Hong-jin&#8217;s movies are known to take unexpected tonal and narrative turns as they progress, <em>Hope<\/em>&#8216;s parallels with <em>Attack on Titan <\/em>and <em>A Quiet Place<\/em> may only be surface-level. Following its early release, the movie has a critics&#8217; score of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes with a total of 41 reviews. While 78% is, by no means, a bad score, it is a little underwhelming compared to Na Hong-jin&#8217;s other hits. It must be noted, though, that the score could significantly go up once the film gets a worldwide release. <\/p>\n<p>The early praise surrounding the movie revolves around its direction, practical action, and compelling performances. Even its scale and production design have earned wide appreciation. However, the main points of contrition revolve around the movie&#8217;s uncanny CGI and creature designs. Some have even expressed frustration surrounding the movie&#8217;s focus on setting up sequels instead of resolving underlying mysteries.<\/p>\n<p>While these shortcomings could hold <em>Hope<\/em> back from becoming as iconic as <strong><em>Attack on Titan <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>A Quiet Place<\/em><\/strong>, it seems to hold immense potential.
