Time and time again, we\u2019ve seen studio executives make the same mistake. Audiences respond to something new and exciting, then the studios just copy and paste that same thing over and over, hoping to capitalize on that fandom and attract that same audience. <em>Twilight<\/em> was followed by a dozen Y.A. adaptations about a supernatural love story; <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/game-thrones-spinoff-prequel-shows-upcoming-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Game of Thrones<\/em> was followed<\/a> by a succession of big-budget fantasy epics (including its own spinoffs); and <em>The Walking Dead<\/em> brought back zombies.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>Whenever <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/lost-pilot-original-jack-shephard-died-plans-changed-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">a TV show like <em>Lost<\/em> hits<\/a>, every television producer and network executive starts trying to come up with \u201c<em>the next Lost.<\/em>\u201d They usually fail miserably \u2014 you can\u2019t catch lightning in a bottle twice \u2014 but some of these attempts to replace <em>Lost<\/em> came damn close. Where <em>Lost<\/em> revolves around a group of random, ordinary people who find themselves stranded on a very special island, <em>Heroes<\/em> revolves around a group of random, ordinary people who suddenly find themselves with extraordinary superhuman abilities. It takes the tropes of American superhero comics and applies the \u201cmystery box\u201d storytelling of <em>Lost<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heroes<\/em> had a stellar first season; it\u2019s one of the most acclaimed debut seasons in television history. Sawyer, <em>FlashForward<\/em> follows an FBI task force\u2019s efforts to uncover the truth when everyone in the world mysteriously blacks out for a little over two minutes. During the blackout, everyone seems to see a glimpse of their own future \u2014 or a \u201cflashforward\u201d \u2014 as they see where they\u2019ll end up in six months.<\/p>\n<p>This was ABC\u2019s first real attempt to replicate the success of <em>Lost<\/em> \u2014 another mystery-driven show hoping to tap into the same audience \u2014 and it had a really interesting hook at first. It begins with a sinkhole opening up in Los Angeles, dragging hundreds of people into a dangerous, prehistoric world. There, the separated Harris family fight tooth and nail to be reunited.<\/p>\n<p>Much like <em>Lost<\/em>, <em>La Brea<\/em> started off as a typical survival story before bringing in loftier sci-fi and supernatural elements. The series is a modernized reimagining of <em>Invasion of the Body Snatchers<\/em> in which water-based creatures start taking over people\u2019s bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The show started airing after <em>Lost<\/em> in 2005, hoping to capture the same demographic, but it wasn\u2019t meant to be. <em>Invasion<\/em> was set in the aftermath of a hurricane \u2014 that\u2019s how these water-based creatures managed to get into town \u2014 and America was still recovering from Katrina, so it was just really bad timing. Much like <em>Lost<\/em>, <em>Manifest<\/em> is a chilling supernatural thriller that begins with a fateful flight. A plane full of passengers goes missing, then reappears five years later. <em>Manifest<\/em> is more overtly supernatural from the outset than <em>Lost<\/em> was, but, crucially, despite those supernatural elements, it\u2019s really all about the characters and their interpersonal drama.<\/p>\n<p><em>Manifest<\/em> had the potential to be the next <em>Lost<\/em>, but the series bounced from network to network, and it never really found the core audience it needed to become a <em>Lost<\/em>-sized hit. The series borrows <em>Lost<\/em>\u2019s conceit of a ragtag band of misfits stranded in the wilderness, coming together to help each other survive, but this version has dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>The high-concept premise sees a group of impoverished humans volunteering to leave a dystopian future behind to live in prehistoric times. It\u2019s all about a town that gets encased in a giant glass dome, similar to Springfield in <em>The Simpsons Movie<\/em>. But, despite having a wildly different premise, <em>Under the Dome<\/em> has a very similar format to <em>Lost<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Much like in <em>Lost<\/em>, we spend every episode jumping around a sprawling ensemble of characters, all trapped together under extreme circumstances. Harold Perrineau \u2014 a.k.a. Michael from <em>Lost<\/em> \u2014 plays the sheriff trying to maintain order and uncover the town\u2019s dark origins.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s a lot scarier than <em>Lost<\/em>, <em>From<\/em> similarly follows a huge cast of characters as they\u2019re forced to contend with the unknown. Abrams didn\u2019t stick around for long during <em>Lost<\/em>\u2019s run \u2014 he was promptly recruited to direct <em>Mission: Impossible III<\/em>, and jumped at the opportunity \u2014 but he was there from the very beginning, at the conception stage, and his signature \u201cmystery box\u201d storytelling style went on to define the series. Abrams directed <em>Lost<\/em>\u2019s now-iconic pilot episode, so his DNA is all over the show, and <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/fringe-tv-show-beat-lost-2000s-sci-fi\/\" target=\"_blank\">with <em>Fringe<\/em>, he tried to do it again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Fringe<\/em> ultimately ended up being too complicated and convoluted to appeal to the mainstream audience that made <em>Lost<\/em> a smash hit. Based on Tom Perrotta\u2019s novel of the same name, <em>The Leftovers<\/em> takes place in a dystopian world where 2% of the Earth\u2019s population has inexplicably vanished, and the other 98% are left wondering what the heck happened to them.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Leftovers<\/em> always struggled in the ratings \u2014 it was always teetering on the brink of cancellation, and the renewal of each new season was a miracle \u2014 so it never matched <em>Lost<\/em>\u2019s commercial success.
