Throughout its run, the show became the biggest in Netflix&#8217;s history, with <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/stranger-things-series-finale-ending-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Stranger Things<\/em> breaking streaming records<\/a> no other series has yet to top.<\/p>\n<p>As the Duffer Brothers were becoming household names, another creator was also making a name for himself in Netflix&#8217;s horror landscape: Mike Flanagan. After the massive success of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/mike-flanagan-horror-netflix-shows-ranked\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flanagan&#8217;s Netflix horror miniseries<\/a>, <em>The Haunting of Hill House<\/em>, in 2018, he signed a multi-year exclusivity deal with the streamer, during which time he made <em>The Haunting of Bly Manor <\/em>(2020), <em>Midnight Mass <\/em>(2021), <em>The Midnight Club <\/em>(2022), and <em>The Fall of the House of Usher <\/em>(2023).<\/p>\n<p>Now that his contract with Netflix has expired, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/mike-flanagan-amazon-prime-video-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flanagan has hopped over to Amazon MGM Studios<\/a>, with whom he has signed a similar multi-year exclusivity contract. His inaugural series under this new partnership will be none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/db\/tv-show\/carrie\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Carrie<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, an eight-episode miniseries adaptation of King&#8217;s 1974 debut novel about the titular bullied teenager from an abusive religious household who discovers she has telekinetic powers and seeks bloody revenge on her tormentors on prom night.<\/p>\n<p>Though there have been three feature-length <em>Carrie <\/em>films, this is the first time King&#8217;s novel is receiving a television series adaptation. This is perhaps best seen in the show&#8217;s answer to the Stephen King antiheroine: Eleven.<\/p>\n<p>Like Carrie White, Eleven not only possesses incredibly strong telekinetic powers, but she was also raised in a heavily controlled, isolated environment. Whereas Carrie was raised under the thumb of a tyrannical zealot of a mother, Eleven grew up in a lab in which scientists performed forcible experiments on her to learn about and exploit her paranormal abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike previous adaptations, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/prime-video-carrie-show-stephen-king-book-changes-mike-flanagan-confirmed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flanagan&#8217;s <em>Carrie <\/em>will explore the origins of the protagonist&#8217;s powers<\/a>. In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/carrie-tv-series-first-look-mike-flanagan-modern-twist-exclusive-12015053\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><em>EW<\/em><\/a>, Flanagan said, &#8220;<em>Stephen King also talks about the \u2018TK gene\u2019 [for telekinesis] and the science behind Carrie\u2019s abilities. Something that the [Brian] De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie\u2019s place in the larger universe, that she\u2019s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn\u2019t know it. The book absolutely points at that, but that was something we could pick up and run with.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>This is yet another thing the Prime Video series has in common with <em>Stranger Things<\/em>, which explored the backstory of <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/stranger-things-eleven-powers-abilities\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eleven&#8217;s abilities<\/a> in great detail. As superpowered outsiders, Eleven and Carrie are opposite sides of the same coin \u2014 Eleven used her powers for good, and Carrie, well, did not. For starters, the story won&#8217;t take place in the 1970s, but in the present day.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/carrie-tv-show-flanagan-changes-fix-stephen-king-book\/\" target=\"_blank\">change from the <em>Carrie<\/em> book<\/a> and the De Palma movie is the role of Carrie&#8217;s father. In both previous works, Ralph White wasn&#8217;t in the picture, but in Flanagan&#8217;s series, his sudden death is the inciting incident, as it results in Carrie (Summer H. Howell) being forced to attend public school for the first time.
