{"id":10272,"date":"2026-07-19T05:36:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-19T00:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=10272"},"modified":"2026-07-19T05:36:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-19T00:36:32","slug":"venezuela-earthquakes-death-toll-rises-to-5119","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=10272","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela earthquakes death toll rises to 5,119"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdnph.upi.com\/ph\/st\/th\/2331784407214\/2026\/upi\/f0718de600d2670a172ff17e69ca00b0\/v1.5\/Venezuela-earthquakes-death-toll-rises-to-5119.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span class=\"story_dl\">July 18 (UPI) &#8212;<\/span> The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has increased to 5,119 people, officials said Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Top_News\/World-News\/2026\/06\/30\/latam-nasa-venezuela-assesment\/4171782830373\/\" target=\"_blank\">quakes on June 24<\/a> &#8212; the biggest the country had seen in more than a century &#8212; also injured more than 16,740 people.\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Jorge_Rodriguez\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Jorge Rodriguez\" class=\"tpstyle\">Jorge Rodriguez<\/a>, president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, said more than 21,470 people remain in makeshift camps, while 17,907 are without housing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The resilience of our people in the temporary camps confirms that Venezuelans are unbreakable,&#8221; Rodriguez said in a statement. &#8220;Together, we are driving the nation&#8217;s renewal, demonstrating that no adversity can stop the strength of those who build the future with hope.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Interim President Delcy Rodriguez on Friday said her government would receive $346 million in emergency funding from the International Monetary Fund.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These funds will help support the affected families with housing, infrastructure, essential public services and other urgent needs,&#8221; the president said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Venezuela has been under crushing economic sanctions by the United States for nearly 10 years, since the government of ousted president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Nicolas_Maduro\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Nicolas Maduro\" class=\"tpstyle\">Nicolas Maduro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, a group of 14 democratic U.S. lawmakers sent a letter to President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/topic\/Donald_Trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Donald Trump\" class=\"tpstyle\">Donald Trump<\/a> asking for the removal of the sanctions.\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These economic restrictions are severely hampering urgent relief efforts, and will continue to threaten Venezuela&#8217;s recovery and long-term reconstruction if allowed to remain in place,&#8221; the legislators wrote in the letter, obtained by <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/usa\/2026-07-14\/group-of-lawmakers-ask-trump-to-lift-sanctions-on-venezuela-to-help-respond-to-earthquake-devastation.html?event=regonetap&amp;event_log=regonetap&amp;prod=REGONETAP&amp;o=regonetap\" target=\"_blank\">El Pais<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, signatories demanded an immediate release of Venezuela&#8217;s frozen assets abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The June 24 earthquakes were unpreventable natural disasters, but the U.S. government&#8217;s far-reaching economic sanctions and asset freezes that have severely undermined the country&#8217;s response and reconstruction efforts are man-made and avoidable,&#8221; the letter continues. &#8220;And given the president&#8217;s decision to launch military strikes, forcibly detain Nicolas Maduro, and proclaim that his administration &#8216;runs&#8217; the country, you bear additional responsibility for the humanitarian response.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 18 (UPI) &#8212; The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has increased to 5,119 people, officials said Saturday.
