But during a \u201cCall of Duty in Culture Panel\u201d promoting the October release of \u201cModern Warfare 4,\u201d which took place <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/gaming\/news\/modern-warfare-4-call-of-duty-fanatics-fest-1236812530\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/gaming\/news\/modern-warfare-4-call-of-duty-fanatics-fest-1236812530\/\">at Fanatics Fest in NYC<\/a> Saturday, \u201cCall of Duty\u201d movie director and co-writer <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/peter-berg\/\" id=\"auto-tag_peter-berg\" data-tag=\"peter-berg\">Peter Berg<\/a> took the stage to reveal to fans that the film will be set in the \u201cModern Warfare\u201d universe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSince the original game\u2019s release in 2003, the \u201cCall of Duty\u201d franchise has grown to include more than 30 mainline games. Among the dozens of titles, which have hailed from different developers over the years but are now all under Xbox via its purchase of publisher Activision, are the \u201cModern Warfare\u201d games. Beginning with \u201cCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfare\u201d in 2007, the \u201cModern Warfare\u201d storyline marked the first \u201cCoD\u201d games to break from the franchise\u2019s original World War II setting. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u201cModern Warfare\u201d games have largely been set in the Middle East and followed Captain John Price and his Task Force 141 team\u2019s mission to defeat terrorist Vladimir Makarov.
